Mark Vogel lives at the back of a Blue Ridge holler with his wife, Susan Weinberg, an accomplished fiction and creative non-fiction writer, and two foster sons. They share their land with horses, dogs, cats, and assorted poultry. He was drawn initially to the Appalachian region to work with students wishing to become English teachers. Mark has taught for four decades at many levels—middle school, high school, community college, university. For a decade he co-directed The Appalachian Writing Project, and currently serves as Professor of English at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where he co-directs the English Education Program. He is most proud of the many practicing teachers he has helped to welcome in the profession. Recently he received the University of North Carolina Board of Governors Excellence in Teaching award.

For more than twenty years he has published articles on adolescent literacy, young adult and American literature, modern poetry in the classroom, and the teaching of writing, in English Journal, The New Advocate, Alan Review, and other books and journals. He has also served in editorial roles for three academic journals. In the past decade he has focused on writing poetry and fiction as well as academic articles. This writing has become a meditative daily habit often shared with students and friends. Stories have appeared in Cities and Roads, Knight Literary Journal, Whimperbang, SN Review, OurStories, and other journals. Two hundred and fifty poems have appeared in English Journal, Cape Rock, Dark Sky, Broken Bridges Review, Cold Mountain Review, and 40 other journals. Two poetry manuscripts, Becoming Appalachian, and In the Hinterland, are in circulation with publishers. Mark has a special affection for Floyd County Moonshine, which published a good number of his earliest poems, and continues to notice his work.
