The Season for It
Early in the morning the calves were pulled
from the dark, steaming sides of their mothers
and now the pollen-hazed air is filled with
bellows reverberating off the tree
line like church bells heard for miles, a call
looking desperately for a response.
When you plant your seeds take your gloves off, push
each little shelled instruction one by one
into the freshly turned soil. Watch the ants
move the small white pearls of their eggs, let them run
lightly across the exposed skin of your wrist.
We’ll grow, somehow, if it rains in time.
